We live in a world where inequality continues to grow and where the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed existing disparities and damaged vulnerable communities. A world where so many people are starving and where unemployment is rife. In this context, the Mandela Day call for action in 2022 is: “do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.” Our South Africa and Mozambique staff participated in the first-ever 67-minute Grindrod charity webathon and personally pledged funds to feed the hungry. The webathon, hosted by Maeshni Naicker (who plays Shanti in Keeping Up with the Kandasamys’), was hugely successful, with about R90 000 raised in the 67 minutes. The staff from corporate services raised the most money, with the team from Grindrod Terminals Mozambique coming in second. Grindrod pledged to match the funds raised by staff and donate the money to Rise Against Hunger and other charities.
