Celebrating the Richards Bay container terminal concession
At a glamorous event hosted by Transnet Ports Authority (TNPA) in the Port of Richards Bay on 20 May 2025, Xolani Mbambo, CEO of Grindrod and representing the Grindrod Eyamakohsi partnership, and Adv. Phyllis Difeto,
acting Chief Executive for TNPA, signed the concession agreement to build and operate the container terminal in Richards Bay. A proud moment for Grindrod and Eyamakhosi Resources.

Grindrod delivered resilient volumes, stronger earnings and robust cash generation, supported by quality growth opportunities and clear momentum focused on sustainable value.
Terminal volumes increased significantly, driven by strong demand and improved throughput. Container, ships agency, and clearing and forwarding operations traded in a softer market, while rail performance was affected by reduced deployment. Locomotive redeployment is expected to accelerate in the second half, supported by the executed rail access agreement.
Safety remains a core focus. While LTIFR improved further, Grindrod regrettably recorded a fatality in June 2026, and additional controls have since been implemented.
Looking ahead, Grindrod enters the second half with clear momentum and a growth pipeline moving into delivery. Matola expansion, Maputo dredging and thephased rollout of rail open access will strengthen our integrated logistics offering. Our planned entry into container handling at Richards Bay in 2028 marks an important diversification opportunity. Backed by disciplined capital allocation and completed debt restructuring, Grindrod is well positioned to convert strategic momentum into sustainable value.

Grindrod’s Matola Terminal records highest monthly throughput
In May 2025, our Matola terminal achieved a historic milestone, loading over 1075 638 tonnes, the highest monthly throughput on record. This remarkable performance is even more encouraging considering the operational disruptions we faced late last year, including the temporary suspension of rail operations and port activity due to the closure of the Lebombo Border.
We are pleased to report that operations in Maputo and Matola have returned to normal, and we have seen substantial recovery.
Grindrod concludes the acquisition of the remaining 35% interest in Matola
In the first half of 2025, Grindrod concluded the R1.4 billion acquisition of the remaining 35% interest in the Matola terminal. Full ownership provides more flexibility in operating and growing this strategic asset. For more information read the original press release.
