To celebrate World Tree Day, Grindrod planted about 40 trees at Matola Gare Primary School, impacting an entire community.
As part of social responsibility actions, Grindrod planted around 40 trees on the 21st of March at the Matola Gare Primary School in Matola. Its main objective was to make the community and the educational institution aware of the importance of preserving trees, both at an environmental and ecological level.
Focused on the sustainable initiatives, Grindrod, in partnership with the management of EPL Matola Gare, planted fruit trees (oranges, mangoes, papaya and tangerines) that will provide several advantages: nutrients from the consumption of good fruit, shade and possibly the generation of income in the long term. This donation will benefit the 6182 students, 84 teachers, and the community.
In the words of the SHERQ manager leading this initiative, Afonso Bie: "This will significantly impact the local community and beyond - we are doing something which will have a long-term benefit for the children at the school and hopefully the community."
The Director of the EPC (Escola Primária Completa), Maria Raquel Luís, said: "The trees will provide shade and through photosynthesis will contribute to oxygen benefitting the environment." Community members added that the school would consume the fruit within two years and use it as a source of income for the school.
