Grindrod Intermodal (GIM) partnered with the Ukubona Foundation (a non-profit organisation) and conducted employee eye screenings at its Denver facility in Johannesburg, on the 27th and 28th of February 2020.
The testing included all permanent staff, temporary staff, security personnel, contractors on-site, and truck drivers who were in the vicinity over the two days. A total of 196-people was screened and 59-people were informed that they needed spectacles.
The proceeds for the eye testing will be used by the foundation to provide eye screening to school children and provide spectacles to those children who require them.
GIM intends to roll out this initiative nationally in the coming months, in support of the foundation’s good work and to attend some of the screenings at the schools.

The foundation was established in 2017 by Ms. Kelebogile Modutwane and Ms. Nokulunga Zwane, after having worked on other business projects together and discovering that their backgrounds and upbringing were so similar.
Both had been raised by single mothers and both had experienced hardships - having to make the most of the little that they had. It is for this reason that the project is so close to their hearts, and for this reason that they wanted to give back to children in the townships and rural areas.
“Our first approach is to conduct vision screenings which we do on the school grounds. This involves a brief examination that looks for potential vision problems and eye disorders. Once potential eye disorders are identified, we then book them for comprehensive eye tests, with our optometrists. Spectacles are ordered for those learners who have visual problems”, said Ms. Modutwane.
