Corrie Lotz, Manager – SHERQ at Grindrod Terminals, championed and completed the first Grindrod Lighthouse Project. He rallied 19 people from Grindrod Terminals and 1 from Grindrod Locomotives to spruce up the Richards Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals (SPCA) in Richards Bay on 15 and 16 September.
The SPCA provides shelter facilities for the humane treatment of animals, promotes the enactment of laws for the prevention of cruelty to animals, encourages the sterilization of mainly cats and dogs, develops in the general public a humane attitude towards all animal life through education, works for the protection of animals and do any and all things which are not contrary to the law, to carry on the purpose of society.
The SPCA was selected mainly because it is a non-profit organisation that relies entirely on donations and Grindrod stepping in is critical as they would have had to pay for these services.
The group painted kennels, replaced broken tiles and created beds out of pallets and pieces of conveyor. The team was split into two groups and completed the tasks over a two-day period. Staff also donated cat and dog food.
Management has committed to the maintenance of the block of 13 kennels in 2017. SPCA management thanked everybody for the good gesture and for all the generous donations made; they were also thankful that Grindrod Terminals committed to the on-going maintenance of the area that was revamped.
