SGM supports Great Girls

The team from Sturrock Grindrod Maritime (SGM) in Cape Town recently joined Great Girls, one of their CSI beneficiaries, at their year-end celebration on the 9th of December 2023. Great Girls is an organisation that provides support to young women in Grades 11 and 12 from disadvantaged communities. They provide them with life skills and access to mentors to aid them in finding meaningful full-time employment or pursuing further studies.

Currently operating from two sites in Belhar and Lavender Hill, Great Girls are looking to open a new site at Visantekraal in 2024 which will see their programme host around 90 girls for the year.

Their programme covers modules such as CV writing, mental and physical health workshops, and teaches them skills such as confidence-building, accountability, public speaking, and journalling. The course highlight is the practical in-person interview sessions that are set up with volunteers to help the girls prepare for when they enter the working world.

The SGM team joined the 2023 graduates, fellow alumni students, mentors and other donors for a fun-filled day at Pinelands High School. The day’s activities included a Secret Sunrise, an outdoor silent disco and meditation session, and afterward, an action-packed dodgeball tournament.

Congratulations to this year’s girls for graduating from the programme!
