Port of Maputo started channel maintenance dredging

The dredging vessel ILEMBE arrived in Maputo on 28 November 2022, having set sail from Durban. The Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) dredger was contracted as part of the regular maintenance programme of the port access channels, performed every two years. TNPA was awarded a contract following an RFP carried out in July 2022.

Jan De Nul carried out the last major campaign in 2019/2020. A priority intervention was also carried out during the first semester of 2022 as part of the berth-deepening project. These works were limited to berths and intervention at critical sections of the Matola and Polana channels.

Dredger ILEMBE is a TSHD (Trailer Suction Hopper Dredger) with a capacity of 5500 m3. The current scope involves the maintenance of the Polana, Xefina and Northern channels to remove approximately 550,000 m3 of sediment. The project is estimated to be completed within two months.

MPDC and TNPA have a long-standing relationship, with cooperation in training and dredging.
