On Thursday the 15th of November, the South African branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) welcomed 84 members, students and guests from various shipping fraternities to share the achievements of the students at a prize giving awards ceremony at the Royal Natal Yacht Club.

The guest speaker was Durand Naidoo, Managing Director of Linsen Nambi. Durand completed schooling at New Forest School, a school supported by the ICS. Durand also completed his ICS exams and was voted in as a member of the ICS. Durand shared his journey with the Institute and his current role and participation in the industry.
Students who write the ICS exams are challenged and are required to demonstrate that the theory and knowledge attained during their coursework can be applied to circumstances. To ensure a pass, the international standards set by the industry are to be met.
Catherine Moodie, Vice Chairperson, shared the developments of studying through the ICS and the importance of an internationally recognised qualification.
A total of 10 students were awarded for the highest marks achieved in South Africa for the November 2017 and May 2018 exams.
Grindrod sponsored Port Agency award which was presented by Hayley Dreyer.
Two students completed their Foundation Diplomas in the May 2018 exams and two students, Katlego Modiba and Nomosonto Ncebe from Sturrock Grindrod Maritime were also presented with their Understanding Shipping course certificates.
In November 2018, 17 students wrote a total of 28 exam papers.
