Meals for the needy every Wednesday

What started off at the end of last year by the Ocean Africa Container Lines (OACL) team, initiated and headed by their CEO, Mr. MD Simjee, to feed the homeless and destitute, has grown into a group effort with other divisions joining the mission of feeding the hungry.

Initially, the project entailed the preparation of 700-food hampers by the OACL staff every Wednesday morning at 07h30 in their offices on the 5th floor, Grindrod House and then distributed to the impoverished living under the bridge on the Esplanade. Unfortunately, the initiative was placed on hold when the homeless people were relocated.

In July 2019 the scheme was revived when OACL partnered with the NGO, Domino Foundation. The Foundation distributes food hampers to needy learners at various schools. Since the revival, the project has been extended to include the efforts of staff from Grindrod Intermodal, Sturrock Grindrod Maritime, Röhlig Grindrod, Group Human Resources, Group IT and Group secretarial. The individuals meet every Wednesday in the Auditorium at Grindrod Mews and work as a team with the common mission of feeding the hungry.

The Domino Foundation has identified learners to receive sandwiches daily. Grindrod Group provides sandwiches, juices, and fruit once a week to these learners.
