As per the Making Waves article published in December 2016, Grindrod Intermodal (GIM) acquired the dry port in Nacala, Mozambique in November 2016 and in partnership with Terminals de Norte (TDN) provide a container storage facility for Port Nacala. The land provided Grindrod a base to develop intermodal operations to include integrated cross-docking and ‘freight packing station’ services for Syrah’s Balama Graphite Project – part of the logistics contract awarded to Grindrod.
The development involves the construction of 10 000m² warehouse and 30 000m² container yard.
All layer works on site have been completed for the load capacity required, and the foundations laid for the warehouse. Construction is expected to be completed by 31 May 2018, subject to favourable weather conditions.
In October, Grindrod acquired the adjacent land of 21 000m² to facilitate the truck and container handling equipment workshop, refueling station as well as a transport administration office, canteen and change room facilities. Construction has already commenced.
